Does anyone use the audio message feature on the iPhone?

Hi. I’ve had my iPhone for ages, but just only recently noticed that there was an audio messages button which I assume will allow you to record a message and send it to someone. Voiceover is telling me to double-tap and record my message and then lift my finger when I’m done, but when I try to do this it doesn’t seem to work. Has anyone used this feature before and, if so, can you please tell me what I may be doing wrong? It’s more of a novelty, as if I want to say anything important I’d just make a call, but it did catch my interest enough to play around with it and see if I could figure it out. Thanks for reading.

Tap it twice. Talk. Tap is twice again to top it. Send it like you do written text.

I am curious, since my device is too old to try it out, if there is some sort of limit for how long you can record your message.

For example facebook messenger only allows you to record up to a minute.

As far as I've found there isn't a limit, but I've never sent any messages
that were longer than a couple minutes. And its pretty straight forward. You
double tap, and hold your finger down on the button after the second tap.
Then you record, kinda like talking into a walkie-talkie. When you're
finished, you lift your finger up. It will give you options to review your
message, or you can just send it. Nothing too special about it. The sound
quality is awful though.

Oh, I didn't even know this was a thing. i thought this was just the dictate feature you were all talking about.

I'm not sure how people could miss the audio feature; it's right after the edit field where you type messages.

Is this iPhone to iPhone only or can you send it to someone using a Galaxy or something?

I think this is I-phone to I-phone.

Post 9 by forereel (Just posting.) on Thursday, 12-Feb-2015 22:15:12

It is iDevice to iDevice.
If you wish to send an audio message to other type phones record a voice memo and select share.
Under there you will see text. Send it like that.

My voice message button only shows if I'm texting an iPhone though.
If I'm texting other type phones, I don't see it.

Wayne, you're right, but I didn't count on myself to have gotten that exploration
right.
Thanks for the tips. Now, although this is obvious to many: What's the point of
sending an audio message? Is it sort of like sending a pic, where you just get
the sounds of the party you're at instead? Otherwise it would be like leaving a
voicemail, sort of. Yeah maybe I'm a bit behind on this, but at least have the
honor to admit as much. I'm curious more than anything.
I find myself wishing more services did audio because everyone has pics. But
without a voice to put to a person some things just don't communicate well, just
like for sighted people having a pic improves things.

I think they just implemented it because all the other messaging apps out there have it, with the exception of kik.

Kik still only uses text.

I read somewhere you can use voice on Kik, but it requires an addon, and you all need the addon for it to work.

Seems pointless, better to have it built into the app.

sending an audio message is sometimes easier than typing out a long text message, if you don't have a Bluetooth keyboard available.
if someone is the type to stay out often, though, sending audio messages wouldn't be very convenient, as background noise is often an interference.
so, it isn't a matter of "what is the ppoint of audio messages," but rather, what is more comfortable/convenient/manageable for each individual.

At the risk of incurring the spite of those clearly smarter than I am, I'm still not seeing any audio message functionality on my Iphone. Is this a feature available only for IOS 8 and above? Only thing after the edit field is "send". There is of course the "dictate" function, which I use religiously, but this sounds like something far different.

Yes, Blind Guardian, this started with iOS 8. So if you're running 7, it's not there. And it is different than dictation. This is where you're actually making a voice recording, and sending that recording to the person you're texting. It'd be like making a voice memo and sharing it, only minus the extra steps.

just to clarify, audio message is also available on Mac OS X Yosemite.

Ahhh, thank you for the response. So, not all that hard to miss after all, seeing as it's not there.

Nope, not hard at all. Grins. Besides, in my personal opinion you're not missing much. Mostly I find it to be in the way.

Post 19 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Sunday, 15-Feb-2015 15:01:29

yes, it is very much in the way. I, personally, would much rather take the time to type out messages, rather than using the audio message feature, or Siri.

Post 20 by forereel (Just posting.) on Monday, 16-Feb-2015 12:52:07

Ah, but it is useful to a point sometimes.
If Siri is not available for example, and you are driving, or you can't type in the screen for some reason, an audio message it just the ticket.
I don't find it gets in the way no more then the other feature that allows for sending media.

It works for what it does. I wouldn't wanna send long ass messages that way, but yep. works well.

Post 22 by Animal metal (I'm a martian) on Tuesday, 17-Feb-2015 22:28:53

and another way, record your message swipe up and it will send... :D

Post 23 by ApplePeaches (If the zone bbs was a drug, I'd need rehab.) on Sunday, 01-Mar-2015 14:58:53

I use it sometimes but it is kind of pointless because you can just call the
person.

I use the kik messager and i did not know that you must get a add on thing inorder to
use the messanger. That is something new that i have learned. But as far as the
question you are only to send to eye any devise according to other people they have
gotten my i messages that have been vedio or audio messages so it does actually work
for android to.

You double tap and hold. You hold your finger on the screen, release it when
you're done, and then just double tap to send it. This hasn't worked well
with IOS 9. I have to do it a second time for it to send.
